The Totally Relatable Reason Ed Sheeran Got Rid of His Phone

Pop stars: They’re just like us.

If you want to reach Ed Sheeran, you’d better email him (if you’re lucky enough to have his email address, that is). The pop singer doesn’t have a phone, a fact he shared during a new episode of Carpool Karaoke on The Late Late Show with James Corden. And the reason why is completely understandable.

After Corden asked if Sheeran was still on his “no phone, no internet” kick, Sheeran explained, “I actually don’t have a phone anymore. I had a phone for like two weeks and then I just didn’t charge it.”

As for why Sheeran prefers to live the no-phone life, he told Corden, “I’d wake up every morning, and there’d be like 50 messages and none of them would say ‘Hey, how are you?’ It’d be like ‘Can I have this?’ ‘Can you lend me this?’ ‘Can you do this?’ ‘Can I get this?’ It was fine at the beginning, and it just got really draining by the end.” We’d ditch our phones, too, if we were in Sheeran’s shoes.

Sheeran told Corden that he should “definitely” try going phone-free, and if you find yourself drained by your own devices, you might want to consider the Sheeran method of disconnecting too, even if it’s only for a little while.

People look for retreats for themselves, in the country, by the coast, or in the hills . . . There is nowhere that a person can find a more peaceful and trouble-free retreat than in his own mind. . . . So constantly give yourself this retreat, and renew yourself.
