Adrian Grenier: ‘I Don’t Have a Routine, I Have a ‘Flow’’

The actor and environmental activist on what gives him energy.

When you have the opportunity to ask some of the most interesting people in the world about their lives, sometimes the most fascinating answers come from the simplest questions. The Thrive Questionnaire is an ongoing series that gives an intimate look inside the lives of some of the world’s most successful people.

Thrive Global: What’s the first thing you do when you get out of bed?
Adrian Grenier: Turn on music.

TG: What gives you energy?
AG: My friends, my family, and my dog! I am fueled by the passions of the people in my life.

TG: What’s your secret life hack?
AG: I don’t have a routine; I have a “flow.” Not trying to maintain a strict regimen allows me to keep a healthy mindset. Freeing myself from daily expectations has been really helpful — especially since I travel so much.

TG: Tell us about your relationship with your phone. Does it sleep with you?
AG: It does… or I sleep with it! It’s both a blessing and a curse to be connected to everyone you love everywhere in the world 24/7. It allows me to maintain really important relationships, but it can also be dangerous distraction when maintaining those online relationships overshadows your in-person experiences. I’m working on finding the balance.

TG: You unexpectedly find 15 minutes in your day, what do you do with it?
AG: Jam session. If I’m at home, and no one is recording in the studio. I’ll head to the basement to jam with whoever is in the house. (In case you’re wondering, I have a community recording studio in my basement — the Wreckroom.)

TG: When was the last time you felt burned out?
AG: A few years back I really hit my limit. I wasn’t taking the time to treat my body or spirit with respect and so I burned out. After taking some time off I was able to re-evaluate and rebalance my approach to daily habitats. Establish that “flow” I mentioned ;)

TG: Share a quote that gives you strength when times are tough.
AG: “All things share the same breath — the beast, the tree, the man…the air shares its spirit with all the life it supports.” — Chief Seattle
