A Fitness Entrepreneur Explains Why She Always Puts Self-Care First

Lisa Druxman on the first thing she does when she gets out of bed, her biggest energy source and her organized email strategy.

Thrive Global: What's the first thing you do when you get out of bed?
Lisa Druxman: I follow a routine of WPCM - Wake, Pee, Coffee, Meditate

TG: What gives you energy?
LD: Nature gives me energy. I think it's important to get out and get into fresh air each day, throughout the day.

TG: What's your secret life hack?
LD: Schedule self care first. Most people feel overwhelmed and out of balance because they have no time for self care. If you put that in first, you will always feel good!

TG: Name a book that changed your life.
LD: Too many to list. The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson - Love the concept of little changes adding up and making big differences!

TG: Tell us about your relationship with your phone. Does it sleep with you?
LD: I have a love hate relationship with it. I am on it way too much. And I am good at creating rules for myself. At about 8:00, it goes on it's dock and I don't look at it for the rest of the night.

TG: How do you deal with email?
LD: I do emails in specific blocks of the day. First, I hit select all and just deselect the emails I need and trash the rest. Then I sort. If I can do it in 2 minutes or less, I do it. If I can delegate it, I do that. If I need to file it, I do that. And then I boomerang it. Boomerang is an app where I can tell it when to come back into my inbox.

TG: You unexpectedly find 15 minutes in your day, what do you do with it?
LD: The honest answer is probably scroll through social media. If I were to "should" on myself, it would be to meditate or go for a walk.

TG: When was the last time you felt burned out and why?
LD: At some point every week. It happens when I say yes to too much. I feel burned out when I don't hold space sacred in my day. I do my best to keep margin in my schedule so I don't feel overwhelmed trying to get from one meeting to the next.

TG: When was the last time you felt you failed and how did you overcome it?
LD: I feel like I fail every day. Whether it is falling while trying to do a handstand or handling a communication poorly with an employee. But I would like to think that I fall forward and do my best to learn from each experience and try again. I still won't be able to do a handstand tomorrow though.

TG: Share a quote that you love and that gives you strength or peace.
LD: This one is on my desk.. "every single minute of every single day, you are writing the story to your only life."
